Mount Cook National Park

Drove back North today, up the eastern side of the Southern Alps to Mount Cook National Park. The whole area is very 'Lord of Rings' and you keep recognising locations as you drive through. There are 19 peaks over 3000 metres (9836 ft) and glaciers cover 40% of the park.

Mt Cook (or Aoraki) is New Zealand’s highest mountain.

The weather was fantastic and the only clouds were being formed on top of the snow peaks. I had to keep stopping to take photos of the scenery.....much to Andy's annoyance, who 'just wanted to bloody get there!'

The Mount Cook township sits at the base of these ominous mountains and looks like it will be smothered under a rock slide at any moment!

We stayed in the YHA which was packed for the Easter weekend and then walked to the much posher 'Hermitage' and 'the Mountaineer's Cafe' to eat.

Liquid lunch at the Hermitage

Statue of Sir Edmund Hillary, who practiced on Mt Cook before climbing Mount Everest.
