Birds & Beasts

When my mum is on skype, she thinks it’s wonderful that she can hear parrots in the background. And of course it is lovely to have such exotic birds around ……but she doesn’t get woken up by the bloody things every morning at dawn!!

The birdlife is incredible here, Kookaburras, Ibis Crested pigeons, Gallahs (pink & grey cockatoos) Eastern Rosellas and thousands of Rainbow Lorakeets. How anyone can keep them as pets, I’ll never know. They make it absolutely impossible to sleep-in with the amount of squawking going on and they squabble constantly.
This Kookaburra sat on John & Steph’s balcony for ages and seemed a bit miffed that no-one was feeding him (they like minced beef apparently). He took no notice of us whatsoever - even yawning and closing his eyes.

Just down the road, in between Safety Beach and Woolgoolga Beach there is a small lake and riverfront. A huge colony of big fruit bats, ‘Grey-headed Flying Foxes’ roost in the trees here. They tend to pee a lot, so you can actually smell the ammonia a mile away – it certainly makes your eyes water when trying to get close enough for a photo!
