As we couldn’t dive on our last day we opted for a day’s Kayaking & snorkeling. It was great kayaking through the islands and several wrecks lie in the shallow water just under the surface.
In Mandarinfish lake, shallow coral patches host the Paluan Mandarinfish which are just as difficult to photograph as the Yapese ones!!

We took a side-trip to one of the marine lakes that feature the famous land-locked jellyfish. They get most of their food from the symbiotic algae in their tissues so they follow the sun across the lake like a sundial, avoiding the shady edges where predatory anemones live. You can make them change direction by shading them with your hand (and messing with their heads).
There are over 5 million Golden jellyfish in the lake and they have extremely mild stings so unless you are allergic to medusa stings you can snorkel amongst them without a problem. It’s the strangest sensation, like swimming in partially-set jelly (Jello).
