Geography lesson
To give you a better idea of where we are, here is the map of the Federated States of Micronesia. Yap ‘proper’ – made up of the four islands, Yap, Map, Rumung and Tomil-Gagil. So, we are on Yap island…..which is part of Yap proper…..which is part of Yap State….. Yap Yap Yap! The people of Rumung in the north decided to protect themselves from modernizing influences and even removed the bridge that connected them to Map.
The islands are criss-crossed with ancient stone paths and some can be used without having to ask permission from the village. This one starts just across the road from the hotel and leads through the Taro patches and flower gardens up to the highest point on the island.
View down to the ‘city’ of Colonia (named after Columbus just like every other place the Spanish have ever set foot on). There are 3 mini-markets, a couple of hardware stores, 3 launderettes and a bunch of small shops selling a bizarre mix of products, from sacks of rice to office chairs.
