Staff Christmas Party

On Saturday, we held the Staff Christmas Party at the dive shop and everyone seemed to have good time....well – except for the pig of course – I’m sure she wasn’t too happy to be there!
Each department had been assigned with a food group by the Christmas Party committee so there was a mountain of fish, chicken, sausages, taro (food-dyed in every shade) bread, salads plus the pig roast.
Andy & Bill handed out the staff awards and Jude was the overall Staff Member of the Year. He is originally from the Philippines and is probably the hardest working, happiest person we’ve ever met. He cleans the pool, helps run the brewery, serves in the bar, carries luggage, fixes printers – nothing is too much trouble for Jude.
There are no drink-driving laws in Yap but you do have to carry a drinking permit. It costs $5.50 (50c for the card to be laminated!) and the Police can withdraw your Permit if you get into trouble. Yapese women do not really drink at all, but the men really like to indulge, so in order to limit the risk from the free beer, our party finished at 6pm. Sure enough, Leo, one of our maintenance men crashed his car that night and ended up in hospital, but thankfully he wasn’t seriously injured and didn’t hit anyone else!
