180th Meridian & Waterslide

The International dateline (180th Meridian) officially runs straight through the island – although the dateline has been bent around Fiji to keep the whole nation in one time zone.

The marker sign shows how you can be in today and yesterday – and we realized that we were also the furthest we can possibly be, from the UK.

The Waitavala Waterslide is 25 min walk from the resort and if you go after school hours or on Sunday, the local kids will show you how to avoid killing yourself.

Andrew & Andy were game of course and I stood at the bottom taking pictures (to send to the insurance company).

The boys helped them across the stream and through a series of pools over the slippery rocks until they reached the top.

Andy said to the youngest boy, “ok show us how it’s done”. At which, he took a run at it, skated across the 1st pool on his bare feet, then flipped over in the air and dived headfirst into the 2nd pool. The older boy turned to Andy and said, very seriously, “you don’t want to do that…”.

The chaps decided to come down feet first and slithered to the bottom without any broken bones (just a bruised hip for Andy).
