Arrived back in Suva at 7.30am the next morning and Andrew & Lexi came to meet us. Suva, the capital of Fiji, is the largest city in the South Pacific with a population of 200,000. It has some great cafés and a mixture of markets and modern shops where you can get almost anything. There are some nice colonial style buildings and Suva is also home to the University of the South Pacific attracting students from neighbouring islands, such as Tonga, Vanuatu & Samoa.
There’s not much sign of December’s coup, except the military checkpoints on the main roads around Suva. Not that they check anything…… they just smile and wave at you.
Tagging along with Andrew while he did the banking, paid staff pensions and collected boat parts reminded us very much of our supply-runs in Belize City. Suva is much better developed and doesn’t have the drive-by shootings of course, but the handwritten receipts (in triplicate) and Courts Furniture stores ripping off the locals, were just the same!
Outside the city, the villages and countryside also look very similar to Belize, with horses and cows grazing alongside the roads.
