Hanoi Highlights

Vietnam is hosting the APEC conference in October so the government is busy renovating many of the monuments ready for the International visitors. Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum was closed and workers were round the back scrubbing the granite.
Incidently, Ho Chi Minh had lived an austere life and left strict instructions for his cremation and that his people were not to waste money on building monuments to him, nor travel to visit his tomb. So, what do the government do? Against his wishes, they preserve his body (like Lenin) for everyone to gawk at, build a massive mausoleum & turn his house into an exhibition – thus, millions of Vietnamese spend their savings to visit Hanoi! The poor bugger must be spinning in his glass box!

The Presidential Palace is an impressive French building still used for entertaining foreign dignitaries.
