Hoi An is a nice little relaxed town on the river, full of original buildings in the Vietnamese, Chinese & Japanese style. The town relies on fishing and the tourist trade and is full of tailors, art galleries, funky bars and restaurants. Hotels are about $20 per night and dinner for two costs about 200,000 Dong ($12) including beers.
The Japanese covered bridge was built in the year of the monkey, to replace a bridge built in the year of the dog. It has statues of each on either side and Hang said that this was ‘our’ bridge, since Andy’s birth year is dog and I am monkey!
The town has a few dive shops that are enjoying the recent relaxation by the government regarding dive-able areas. We tried to book a trip but Typhoon Xangsane was on the way so all the boats have been ordered into safe harbour.
