Mardi Gras Fair Day

On Sunday we went to Victoria Park for Fair Day – part of the 2007 Mardi Gras Season. Victoria Park was buzzing with stalls and the outfits were incredible. Many had brought their dogs for the ‘Doggywood’ competition and obviously the whiter and fluffier the better. Some of the dogs had matching costumes and one had it's white bits dyed bright pink!

They had various ‘celebs’ from aussie tv and some great bands on the main stage. This one was called ‘iOTA’.

‘The Frocks’ did very good covers of Pink and Madonna songs and were joined by JBear (Sydney Leather Pride person of the year, don't you know..) for a Robbie Williams number.

The ‘Miss Fair Day’ drag queen competition was hilarious but for some reason, we found the Drag Kings just plain scary.

One of the judges was Kylie Booby (I kid you not) the winner of ‘Australian Princess’ - the TV reality show where aussie chicks were given etiquette lessons and fought to be crowned by some distant royal prince and Fergie’s sister. (Yes, we admit it was compulsive viewing when we last had a TV in Perth!).

Anyway, during the ‘personality interview’ part of the drag queen competition, one of the guys proposed to his partner – a point that was totally lost on Kylie (who was too obsessed with her dress and what to say next). Before he could even answer, she ploughed on with the questions, talking right over them! It was excruciatingly embarrassing and the host (a Big Brother winner and almost as bad himself) had to tell her what was happening. She then launched into more embarrassing questions such as ‘who’s the bride?’ AAARRRGGGHH!!

Sadly, we won’t be around for the world famous Mardi Gras night-time parade through the streets of Sydney on 3rd March. However, 'Fair Day' was an excellent note to end on, as it's time to say goodbye to Australia as we leave for Fiji on Tuesday.
