Perth is a very compact city with a mix of modern and historic buildings along the Swan River, surrounded by parks and walking trails. Only 12,000 people live in the city centre and it has a really friendly atmosphere. Most of the shops close at 5.30pm though, and almost everything is closed on Sundays (a bit like 1970’s Britain). It’s easy to get around and seems to have more backpacker hostels, internet & travel shops than anything else! As soon as we arrived we bought a ‘Esky’ (aussie term for a cool-box) a mobile phone and, most importantly, Andy booked a kiteboarding session at the beach for Sunday!
Whilst other states put their clocks forward in October, Daylight Savings was being tried for the first time in Western Australia on December 3rd. Hundreds of people missed their flights at Perth airport and even the kite-boarding guys were an hour late on Sunday!
