The Merlion at the waterfront Clark Quay – funky bars & restaurants
Fort Canning Park is worth the climb up the hill to overlook the city. It was the site of the original botanical gardens and has enormous trees covered in bromeliads and cheeseplants - but don’t even think about going near the water reservoir at the top!
Sam’s grandmother, May, is originally from Singapore, so we got to meet May’s niece, Diana (Sam’s second cousin) and her husband Philip.
They got married on 15th October this year and explained all the aspects of a traditional Singapore wedding and showed us their photos. There is no “unlucky to see the wedding dress” taboo here, so before the day, the couple had a photo shoot in various locations around the city. They wore both the western-style wedding dress/suit plus beautiful Chinese silk outfits and the resulting portfolio was absolutely stunning and they looked like movie stars!
On the day of the wedding, Philip had to complete several ‘trials’ before being allowed to collect Diana in the morning, including eating bread spread with wasabi & chili paste and a thick slice of lemon including the rind! The photos said it all and she was definitely worth it!
It was lovely to finally meet this side of the family and we hope to return to Singapore again and spend more time with them.
