Spent the night at Dundas Rocks, a township that was abandoned in the early 1900’s when richer gold veins were found at Norseman. Back in 1892 they supplied drinking water to the goldfields by collecting rainfall on the rocky outcrop and by boiling & condensing the saline lake water. Nowadays, it’s a free campsite with information panels & street signs marking out the original town.
Of course, Andy had to climb the rocks (because they were there). We were back on the road by 6:45am and ready to embark on the Nullarbor Plain. The Eyre Highway stretches 2700 kms from Perth to Adelaide across the Great Australian Bight and we were about to tackle 1979kms off it.
For a ‘Tree-less Plain’ it seemed to have plenty of trees on it and there are roadhouses and coastal lookouts every so often, that provide a break from the monotony of straight roads.
Had a close shave with a 2 metre tall kangaroo that bounced directly in front of us - looked us straight in the eye - before accelerating away into the bush. Luckily, we were only doing 90 k/mph and managed to slam on the brakes and avoid it.
