Eaglehawk Neck is the narrow point connecting the peninsulas and it was once guarded by a chain of vicious dogs - effectively sealing the Tasman peninsula off as a ‘prison island’. Port Arthur is the main attraction on the ‘Convict Trail’ but we chose to visit the ‘Coal Mines Heritage Site’ near Taranna instead. 
Up to 600 convicts laboured here in the 1800s and very creative interpretative panels explain the ruins of the mineshafts, penitentiary and underground cells spread between walking trails and a great beach.
