Spent the night somewhere on the highway on the Eyre Peninsula (nice sunset) and then drove on to Adelaide where we had booked 3 nights over the New Year. Our 1st choice was fully booked so we ended up at a ‘BIG4 holiday park’ – packed with families and kids for the school holiday. The park had a segregation policy and we were put into Aisle 9, the ‘International section’ (which presumably protects the foreign visitor from hordes of aussie kids). The camp kitchen facilities were good and that’s where we met our neighbours, Gert & Christine from Hanover.
Caught the tram back to Glenelg and stopped at The Dublin Hotel for Guinness, wine and tapas on their waterfront terrace. We met 9 years ago today in Dublin so we thought the venue was appropriate!
Met up with Gert & Christine for drinks when we got back to the campsite and arranged to go out together for New Year’s Eve.
A short walk along the shore and you reach Adelaide’s beach, Glenelg. It has trendy bars, restaurants and shops all along the marina & Jetty Road, plus a tram service that runs into the city.
Adelaide itself is very small, with Victorian stone architecture and set on a grid system, surrounded by parkland. Had a walk through the botanical gardens to get some shade but everything looked parched, I guess they have to obey the drought-regulations too. Quite fancied this German designed Palm house, built in 1877.

It was incredibly quiet, with the exception of Rundle Mall & Rundle Street, the main shopping area and arty café strip. A sand sculpture in the middle of the shopping centre sweated in the heat, despite being surrounded by A/C units.
