On our way to Mount Gambier, we stopped at Naracoorte Caves, where fossils of Giant Kangaroos and Giant Wombats (the size of a cow) were found in 1969. It turns out that loads of the Pleistocene era animals washed into the sinkholes and the site now has UNESCO status due its importance to paleontologists.Mount Gambier City (small town) sits on an extinct volcano and is famous for its craters, lakes, caves & sinkholes.
Blue Lake is 5km around and it turns turquoise and cobalt blue in summer. Before they knew about calcite precipitation, one theory was that the locals were adding blue dye to attract tourists! Valley Lake
Umpherson Sinkhole – created when the roof of a cave collapsed and now a Victorian style terraced garden. It is floodlit at night when the resident possums come out to feed.
