Tsukiji Fish Market - Tokyo

Left at 4.45am to get to the Tokyo Fish Market in time for the tuna auctions. The market was crazy with electric & diesel mini-fork-lift thingy’s zipping up and down the aisles ferrying various frozen, chilled and live creatures around. Nearly got run over several times.

The tuna auction hall was brilliant with massive fish all over the floor and frantic bidding going on. The bidders each had a gaff and bashed it into the tail stump to get a piece of flesh, melt it in the hand and test it for consistency and taste.

We stopped for breakfast at one of the shoebox sushi restaurants in the market and had the best, freshest fish ever whilst squished up against the counter! The chef was chatting away to Jim about the Cameron Diaz’s autograph on the wall – apparently she and Justin Timberlake had been in and she was not as pretty in person…a bit spotty. (Always good to know..ha ha.)
