On the way back, we passed through the monkey zone and sure enough a band of Tibetan Macaques were waiting to pounce on the tourists. The males can weigh up to 50kilos and they have big canines so we were told to put bottles of water and food into our rucksacks and keep our sticks at the ready.

They actually employ ‘Monkey Police’ armed with slingshots to drive them back when they get too aggressive but, thinking of Rob & Chrissie’s tug-of-war-with-a-monkey experience in Japan, we rushed through as quick as possible!
