The ‘slaughter’ section included live chickens, pigeons, ducks, geese, rabbits and dogs plus a line of butchers and two rows of tables containing all the various cuts.

The eating-dogs are a certain breed, a bit like a Spitz (as seen on the bike ride page below) and they only eat light-coloured ones. It was pretty nasty seeing a dog carcass on a chopping block and cages of live ones stored underneath. (We’ll spare you the picture). The local people believe that eating dog keeps you warm, so it is not as popular during the summer months.
The fish section contained vats of fish, shrimp, eels, frogs terrapins and snails etc. plus toads in individual net bags - like oranges!
